Fiera Milano is gearing up for the next edition of miart, Milan's international modern and contemporary art fair, directed by Nicola Ricciardi and taking place from 4 to 6 April 2025 (with a VIP preview on Thursday, 3 April) at Allianz MiCo.
The 2025 edition, titled among friends, borrows its name from the final major retrospective dedicated to Robert Rauschenberg (1925 - 2008) by MoMA. The event draws inspiration from the artist on the centenary of his birth, shaping the fair around the concept of active participation and the key principles that defined his artistic approach: openness to the world, insatiable curiosity, and a commitment to dialogue and interdisciplinarity.
Rauschenberg’s work was deeply influenced by collaboration and his ability to foster productive relationships. In this same spirit, the 29th edition of the fair aims to harness the network of connections miart has built over the years, presenting itself as the engine of an ideal festival of contemporary arts that transcends categories and distinctions between art and non-art, between artist and spectator, between different media and disciplines.
The main stage of this festival will be miart 2025 itself, where – thanks also to the input of a renewed Selection Committee featuring Filippo Di Carlo (Galleria dello Scudo, Verona) and Chiara Rusconi (APALAZZOGALLERY, Brescia) alongside Claudia Ciaccio (ZERO..., Milan), Alice Conconi (Andrew Kreps Gallery, New York), Patrice Cotensin (GALERIE LELONG & Co., Paris - New York), Peter Kilchmann (Galerie Peter Kilchmann, Zurich - Paris), Florian Lüdde (ChertLüdde, Berlin), and Giò Marconi (Giò Marconi, Milan) – visitors will encounter a carefully curated selection of masterpieces from the early and mid-20th century. The programme will also include special initiatives celebrating the Italian masters who shaped the country’s vibrant artistic landscape, cutting-edge contemporary works, and creations by some of the most promising artists making waves in today’s international market.
Returning to miart 2025 is Emergent, the section curated by Attilia Fattori Franchini, dedicated to galleries focused on experimental practices and emerging voices within the contemporary art scene. Also renewed this edition is Portal – curated for the first time by Alessio Antoniolli, Director of the Triangle Network in London and curator at Fondazione Memmo in Rome. Portal will showcase projects that break down boundaries between disciplines, time, and space, taking inspiration from Rauschenberg’s view of artistic creation as a collective process. Rauschenberg once described his collaborative works as “one single group of minds, feelings, and solutions”, and Portal will feature projects that challenge our understanding of geographies and temporalities, offering a richer, more complex vision of the past and present to reframe the future.
Additional stages will come to life in the months leading up to the fair through a series of talks, developed in partnership with five public and private institutions across the city. These conversations will explore the theme of friendship in the artistic field, offering interpretations based on the work of the artists being showcased. This programme, with five monthly events running from November 2024 to March 2025, will see the institutions come together in a unified and meaningful collaboration.
The emphasis on friendship will also resonate throughout the Milano Art Week – a programme of openings and special events organised in partnership with the City of Milan. Exhibitions and initiatives will highlight the importance of enduring, genuinely supportive relationships between artists, galleries, and institutions, grounded in the mutual desire to provide equal and reciprocal assistance.
After four years of steady growth, which has enabled miart to regain momentum and expand internationally – with support from Agenzia ICE – the fair is now keen to emphasise its role as an unmissable event for the Italian and international art markets. miart positions itself both as a driving force and a unifying event for the city’s cultural ecosystem, while also serving as a hub for gallerists, collectors, artists, and curators from all over the world.
